The statue will consist of a young Ronald Reagan standing atop a cannon -- a replica of the actual cannon on which the former President played as a child. For many years, this cannon resided in what is now known as Reagan Park. The original cannon was removed during World War II as part of the metal reclamation campaign.
The design of the statue will represent Reagan's childhood years in his birthplace of Tampico. All of the photos of young Ronald Reagan show him with his chin on his hand (as seen in the school photo below), and this trait will be portrayed in the sculpture. The clay sculptures below are in the preliminary stages of design.
